When someone comments on your Facebook Page or Instagram posts, a comment
reply bot replies publicly under the comment and also sends the person a
direct message. This article covers limiting the posts and keywords that
trigger it, setting up comment replies and direct message replies, tagging the
commenter in your reply, and which bot replies when several match.
---

After reading this, you'll be able to run a "comment to get the offer" campaign: when someone comments a keyword on a chosen post, the bot replies publicly under the comment, tags them, and sends them the offer by direct message.

## Before you start

* Comment reply bots exist only for **Facebook** and **Instagram**; the workspace must be connected to a Page or an Instagram business account.
* Permissions are set separately per platform: **Facebook Comment Reply Bot** and **Instagram Comment Reply Bot**. To add or edit bots you need "Editable".
* On the Free plan, each platform can have up to 10 comment reply bots.

## Open comment reply bots

Click **Meta** in the navigation bar and choose **Comment Reply Bot** under Facebook or Instagram. Folders (up to three levels) are on the left; the list on the right shows each bot's name, status and creation time. Click a bot to see its trigger conditions and **Bot Statistics** (trigger count and trigger users) on the right.

Click a folder, then **Add** at the top right to open the create page. It has three tabs:

| Tab | What you set |
|---|---|
| **Bot Settings** | Name, status, time zone, trigger period and weekly hours, restrict or exclude tags, trigger account and post, trigger keyword, tag settings, service center transfer |
| **Comment Reply** | What's posted **publicly** under the person's comment, up to 5 replies |
| **Direct Message Reply** | What's sent to the commenter **privately** |

## Set the trigger conditions

1. In **Bot Settings**, enter the **Comment Reply Bot Name** (up to 100 characters). **Comment Reply Bot Status** is on by default; turn it off if you're not ready.
2. Under **Trigger Account and Post**, choose which comments to answer:
   * **All Accounts and Posts**: every post on every Page (or Instagram account) connected to the workspace.
   * **Restrict Posts**: click **Select Post**, choose an account and check posts, or search with "Enter Post ID".
   * **Restrict Accounts**: only posts on the chosen Pages or accounts.
3. Under **Trigger Keyword**, choose **No Restriction** (answer every comment) or **Restrict Keywords**. With Restrict Keywords, type keywords under **Contain** or **Equals** and press Enter; up to 20 each.
4. If needed, set the trigger period, weekly effective period, restrict or exclude tags, and the tags to add or remove when the bot fires.

The animation below chooses **Restrict Keywords** under Trigger Keyword, types "want" under Contain and presses Enter; the keyword becomes a tag. Any comment containing "want" now triggers the bot.

The screenshot below shows the finished trigger conditions: Trigger Account and Post is All Accounts and Posts, Trigger Keyword is Restrict Keywords, and Contain has "want". The previews for comment replies and direct message replies on the right are still empty.

## Set up the comment reply

1. Switch to the **Comment Reply** tab and click **Create Reply**.
2. Under **Reply Content**, choose **Text Reply** or **Image Reply** (Instagram supports text only).
3. Type the reply in **Comment Text**, up to 100 characters. Click the person icon at the bottom right of the box to insert **Member Name**; the reply then tags the commenter.
4. Click **Create Reply** again for more replies, up to 5. Use the icons at the top right of each card to reorder, duplicate or delete.

The animation below clicks **Create Reply**, types a thank-you message and inserts **Member Name** at the start. **Comment Reply Preview** on the right shows `{name}`, which becomes a tag of the commenter in the real reply.

The screenshot below shows the finished comment reply: a Member Name tag at the start, followed by a thank-you and a reminder to check Messenger. Below it is the reminder "**The comment reply content will be publicly replied under the fan's comment.**"

## Set up the direct message reply

Switch to the **Direct Message Reply** tab and add the messages to send the commenter privately, such as a coupon link. The formats are the same as Facebook and Instagram chatbots: text, image, carousel, JSON and API; see [Set up Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp chatbots](https://docs.oakmega.com/en/guide/chatbot/meta-chatbot.md).

When all three tabs are done, click **Save** at the top right. (The demos in this article don't save.)

## Rules and limits

This table lists the comment reply bot's limits:

| Item | Limit |
|---|---|
| Comment Reply Bot Name | Required, up to 100 characters |
| Trigger keywords | Up to 20 each for Contain and Equals; at least one with Restrict Keywords |
| Restrict tag / exclude tag | Up to 20 / 100 tags |
| Add tag / remove tag on trigger | Up to 3 each |
| Comment replies | Up to 5; text up to 100 characters |
| Image replies | Facebook only; Instagram supports text only |

## How it works

* **A public reply plus a direct message.** Comment replies are public for everyone to see; direct message replies only reach the commenter. A common pattern is to reply publicly "We've sent you a message" and put the offer or link in the direct message.
* **All 5 comment replies are posted.** The bot doesn't pick one at random; it posts every reply under the comment in order. To avoid flooding the thread, keep just one.
* **One comment triggers only one bot.** The system first looks for a matching bot with Restrict Keywords; only if none qualifies does it use a No Restriction bot. If several of the same kind match, the earliest-created one replies. That makes a No Restriction bot a good default reply for comments without keywords.
* **Member Name becomes a tag.** Facebook tags the commenter by name, and Instagram tags their @username; if the Instagram username can't be fetched, that part is left blank.

## FAQ

### Trigger keyword cannot be empty

Trigger Keyword is set to Restrict Keywords, but both Contain and Equals are empty. Press Enter after typing a keyword so it becomes a tag, or switch to No Restriction.

### Limit Reached

You can have up to 5 comment replies. Delete one you don't need before adding another.

### Someone commented but got no reply

First check that the bot's status is on, then check whether Trigger Account and Post includes that post, whether the comment matches the keywords, and the trigger period, weekly effective period, and restrict or exclude tags. Also, if another bot with Restrict Keywords matches, that bot replies instead.
